The Power of Prompts
Master the art of communicating with AI
It's All in the Prompt
The quality of AI output depends entirely on the quality of your input. Learning to craft effective prompts is one of the most valuable skills in the AI era.
In this module, you'll learn the RIPEN Framework—a proven method for creating powerful, effective prompts that get you exactly what you want from AI.
The RIPEN Framework
A systematic approach to prompt engineering that transforms vague requests into crystal-clear instructions.
👥 Role
What it is: Define the persona or expertise level you want AI to adopt. This sets the tone and expertise of the response.
Examples:
- "You are a youth pastor with 10 years of experience..."
- "Act as a marketing strategist for nonprofits..."
- "You are an expert in engagement strategies..."
Why it matters: Different roles bring different perspectives, depth, and expertise levels to responses.
📥 Input
What it is: The raw material or information you're providing to AI. This is the content, context, or data you want AI to work with.
Examples:
- A piece of text to analyze or rewrite
- A list of data to organize
- A problem statement to solve
- An article to summarize
Why it matters: Clear inputs prevent AI from making assumptions. More specific input = more accurate output.
⚙️ Parameters
What it is: The specific constraints or requirements for the output. These are the "rules of the road" for your response.
Examples:
- Length (e.g., "in 150 words or less")
- Format (e.g., "as a bulleted list")
- Tone (e.g., "conversational" or "formal")
- Audience (e.g., "for teenagers")
- Restrictions (e.g., "avoid technical jargon")
Why it matters: Parameters prevent AI from going off track. They keep responses focused and usable.
📋 Examples
What it is: Concrete examples of the output style, tone, or format you're looking for. Show, don't just tell.
Examples:
- "Here's a sample of what good output looks like..."
- "Follow this format: [example given]"
- "Use a tone similar to this existing post..."
Why it matters: Examples eliminate guesswork. AI learns from patterns. Show what you want, and you'll get what you want.
📝 Notes
What it is: Context, background information, or special instructions that help AI understand the "why" behind your request.
Examples:
- "We're trying to reach young adults interested in faith and culture..."
- "This is part of our Easter campaign, so keep the message hopeful..."
- "Our audience is skeptical about organized religion..."
Why it matters: Notes provide context. AI produces better work when it understands the bigger picture and intent.
Putting RIPEN Together
Example: Creating a Social Media Post
Role: "You are a social media expert specializing in faith-based content for Gen Z audiences."
Input: "Here's our Easter message: 'Jesus rose from the dead. This changes everything.'"
Parameters: "Create a 1-2 sentence Instagram caption that's conversational, uses one emoji, and includes a call-to-action hashtag."
Examples: "The tone should be similar to this: 'Ever feel like you're not enough? You are. And Jesus proved it.'"
Notes: "Our audience is mostly 18-25 year olds who are curious about faith but skeptical of the church. Keep the message hopeful, not preachy. We want them to feel seen, not judged."
When you combine all five elements, you give AI everything it needs to produce exactly what you want. No guessing. No rewrites. Just results.
